What Types of Breakdown Cover Are There?

In the UK, breakdown cover usually covers either you (personal) or a vehicle. With personal breakdown cover, you will be covering yourself in any vehicle, while with vehicle breakdown cover you will be covering the vehicle itself, whoever is driving.

When it comes to more specific details of the type and level of cover, though the terminology and details from different providers can vary, the following categories generally apply:

  • Roadside Assistance

This is the most basic type of breakdown cover and offers a roadside fix to your vehicle. It the vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside then you will simply be towed to a garage or somewhere else within a certain distance.

  • National Recovery

With this cover, the roadside assistance is extended to offer a tow to any UK destination. This means that you will not simply be taken to the nearest garage but can get to a garage of your choice, or simply get home. There would, however, only be one destination point per breakdown.

  • Home Start

One of the exceptions on most breakdown cover states that you cannot get assistance or recovery close to or outside your home. If you want extra peace of mind, it could be helpful to get home start breakdown cover, which will cover you if you break down at home or your car fails to start. Different providers call this different things, but the cover is broadly the same.

  • Onward Travel

This is an extra level of cover that can vary quite considerably in specifics, but often involves getting you onwards to a preferred destination if your vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside. It can sometimes include extras like an overnight stay in a hotel, or the hire of a car to allow you to travel onwards.

  • European Breakdown Cover

You can sometimes add this as an extra to a UK breakdown cover policy, but it can also be an entirely separate policy. This can give you breakdown cover (of various levels) in a number of European destinations.
