Girl lives life to the full despite growth of giant tumour on face: ‘I’m a normal teen’

A teenage girl lives with a huge tumour that engulfs the majority of her face.

But despite this health problem, Esmee refuses to let her health condition hold her back.

The brave 14-year-old dreams about working with animals in the future

She also lives life to the full by pursuing her horse-riding passion and spending time with her friends.

The teen was born with a strawberry birthmark on her face.

These blemishes, known as infantile haemangiomas, affect around 5% of babies.

While the common condition causes raised skin rashes to sprawl across the body, these tend to shrink by the time children reach seven-years-old.

But this wasn’t the case for Esmee, who was later diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

This ailment describes the tangling of blood vessels, which can cause the skin to swell, discolour or develop ulcers.

It may also lead to tumours growing, which has happened in this case.

As Esmee has grown up, a benign tumour has developed on her face.

It sprawls across her chin, mouth and nose which can make everyday activities difficult.

The condition restricts the teen as she only has 40% vision in her best eye.

She must also be careful not to injure her facial region.

The tumour is made up of soft tissue, which could bleed profusely if disturbed or irritated.

Doctors check on the area every month, while also carrying out embolisation procedures to stop the growth from getting bigger.

Even though Esmee is mindful of the restrictions she faces, she refuses to let them hold her back.

She said: “I want people to know about it. I’m just a normal 14-year-old girl who does things like anyone else.”

In the future, the teen hopes to get a job working with animals.

Her friends and family are supportive of these dreams, as well as members of the public.

Following a recent appearance on national TV, many praised Esmee for her positive outlook in life.

One viewer said: “A young girl in the prime of her life.

“It is beautiful to see her standing up for herself. Respect, Esmee!”
